The receipt trick that saved one shopper €40 a week
A month of kept receipts revealed a pattern in weekly shopping that most households never see.

The method is unglamorous: keep every receipt, lay them out at the end of the month, and circle anything that appears more than twice. The duplicates are where the money goes.
In the household we followed, the repeats were not luxuries. They were small top-up shops made on the way home, each one small enough to feel harmless and frequent enough to add up.
Price creep is easier to see on paper
Comparing the same items week to week also exposed steady increases on three staples that had never been part of a promotion. On a screen, those changes vanish into a total. On paper, side by side, they are obvious.
- Circle any item that appears more than twice in a month
- Compare the unit price, not the shelf price
- Note which trips were planned and which were top-ups
The saving was not a single dramatic cut. It was the removal of four small trips a week, replaced by one planned shop — worth roughly €40 by the end of the month.
