A Suspected Serial Killer Was Just Linked to a Sixth Woman — And Her Body Has Never Been Found

But this case is different in one disturbing way:

The woman’s body has never been found.

Prosecutors say 41-year-old Jesse Lee Calhoun has now been indicted on a first-degree manslaughter charge in the death of 32-year-old Elizabeth “Libby” Gibson, bringing the number of women authorities have linked to him to six.

Calhoun has pleaded not guilty to the earlier murder charges. The new indictment is an accusation, not a conviction, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

She disappeared years ago

Gibson was last seen in 2022 and was reported missing in March 2023.

Prosecutors now say they believe she died on or around November 18, 2022 — potentially making her the earliest of the six women whose deaths have been connected to Calhoun.

Her remains have still not been recovered.

That means investigators are pursuing a homicide-related case without one of the most important pieces of evidence normally present in such investigations: the victim’s body.

Authorities have not publicly explained exactly what new evidence led them to charge Calhoun in Gibson’s death.

Prosecutors say the case has grown enormously

The new indictment comes on top of five second-degree murder charges Calhoun was already facing.

Those cases involve:

• Charity Lynn Perry, 24
• Bridget Leann Webster, 31
• Joanna Speaks, 32
• Kristin Smith, 22
• Ashley Real, 22

Their deaths occurred across the Portland area and surrounding parts of Oregon and Washington during 2022 and 2023.

Prosecutors have said the investigation is unusually large and remains active.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Melissa Marrero emphasized that even seemingly minor tips from the public have helped investigators move the case forward.

The sixth charge is not murder

One important detail is that Calhoun has not been charged with murder in Gibson’s case.

The grand jury indicted him on first-degree manslaughter.

According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, prosecutors allege Calhoun unlawfully and recklessly caused Gibson’s death under circumstances showing extreme indifference to human life.

That distinction matters legally.

The five previous cases involve second-degree murder charges, while Gibson’s case currently carries the manslaughter allegation.

Her family says the indictment brings a measure of progress

Gibson’s siblings released a statement after the new charge was announced.

They described Libby as kind, creative and funny, and said the indictment represented an important step toward justice for their family.

But without her remains, major questions remain unanswered.

Authorities have not publicly said where they believe Gibson died, how she knew Calhoun, or what ultimately happened to her body.

Prosecutors say some of those details are being withheld because the investigation is still ongoing.

The other women were found in remote areas

The broader investigation first attracted attention after several women were found dead in rural or wooded locations around northwest Oregon and southwest Washington.

The deaths occurred within a relatively short period, eventually leading authorities to examine whether they might be connected.

Calhoun was later charged in connection with the deaths of five of those women.

He has been in custody since June 2024.

Investigators are still asking the public for help

The district attorney’s office says the investigation is not finished.

Authorities are specifically asking anyone with information about Gibson’s disappearance, death, or any other case connected to Calhoun to contact Portland police.

District Attorney Nathan Vasquez said prosecutors intend to continue pursuing answers for every family involved.

The scope of the case has now expanded from five alleged victims to six.

And in Gibson’s case, investigators are still trying to answer the most basic question of all:

Where is she?

Calhoun is scheduled to be arraigned on the latest charge on September 21.
